Racing returns to Lookout
Pass! An affordable way for kids, elementary through high school, to
learn and enjoy racing.
Basic Invitation and Team Philosophy
- We welcome skiers ages eight to eighteen who'd like to take their skiing to the next level. Skiers should be able to ride the lifts on their own and handle all of Lookout Pass's marked runs.
- The LPRT is all about creating a friendly team atmosphere where kids, parents and coaches work together to improve each individual racer’s skiing.
- Because of our strong commitment to a unified team spirit, we certainly welcome parental help and participation on both training and racing days.
- All team members are expected to behave at all times in a manner that supports our team spirit. We reserve the right to send home anyone who is detracting from that spirit.
- We have opted not to have team uniforms this year. This is largely to help keep costs down. We are planning, however, to make up team jacket patches and helmet stickers.
The program will run 12
weekends beginning in December (December 16 - March 19,
2006).
Training
- The major targets of focus during our training sessions will be:
- General advanced skiing skill development
- Race-specific skill development
- Race tactics
- Team cohesiveness
- Safety awareness
- A lifetime appreciation of the sport
- Depending on each day’s goals and activities, we will train in a variety of group sizes. Our small groups will be determined by age and skill level.
- We believe that being a part of a race team is about more than just running gates, so various “free-skiing” activities and drills will take up a healthy portion of our training.
Racing: Emerald Empire Youth Ski League*
- This is the core of our racing schedule.
- There are 5 Emerald Empire Youth League races.
January 7 Lookout Pass GS
January 26-28 49 Degrees North Training/SG/SL
February 10-11 Schweitzer GS/SL
March 2-4 Mt. Bachelor Buddy Werner Championships GS/SL
March 10-11 Mt Spokane Emerald Empire YSL Finals
- These races are primarily for the J5 (10 and under) and J4 (11-12) age categories, though our old racers may also compete in all of these events except for the Buddy Werner Championships.
- Going to these races is optional. Coaches will continually monitor parents and kids regarding which races individual racers might wish to attend.
- On race days, because coaches will be very busy getting kids ready for their events, we assume that parents will handle the responsibility of taking care of:
- Equipment
- Lift Tickets
- Lunches
- Clothing
- Etc.
- To help keep the cost of the program down, we will leave the transportation of racers to the events up to the parents.
Racing: Juniors (Age 13 and up)*
- Though the core of our program is focused on involvement in Youth League racing, the following options are available to our skiers who have moved up to the Junior age-groups: (J3 and up):
- There will likely be some additional training opportunities during the mid-week at Lookout. More on that later.
- As noted above, racers moving into the Junior category are still welcome at the Emerald Empire Youth League races. They would race in either the J3 or JO category, depending on the USSA license they obtain.
- There are opportunities to attend specific J3—J1 races. As with all races, parents would be responsible for that travel. Since our coaching squad is small (and since our priority at this time is Youth League), coaching at these races is not certain. We’ll need to discuss this further.
*Note that all ages are as of December 31, 2006.
Basic Training Schedule
- December 16 through March 19, the team will train on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
- Additionally, we will meet for a 3-day Christmas camp rather than on the Christmas/New Years weekends. Days and times TBA.
Equipment:
- Appropriate skis, boots, and bindings for the age and ability of the skier. Remember, we are seeking to achieve advanced-level skiing.
- Helmets are mandatory.
- As we progress in our training and start skiing through set courses, the following items become important.
- When we get to “stubbies,” shin guards protect the kids and give them confidence.
- For tall poles, padded gloves and hand guards are nice. Again, this protects the skier and lends confidence.
- For slalom training and racing, a chin guard is a must.
Cost for the 15-Week Program
- $370 (not including lift tickets)
- Team members will need to assume the cost of registering for USSA membership dues. USSA membership is necessary to participate in races. Go to www.ussa.org for more information.
